In the United States of America health disparities occur in many diseases demonstrated by an increased incidence, morbidity, and mortality of African-Americans compared to the majority Caucasian population. Colorectal cancer is included in this unfortunate disparity. Socioeconomic, ethnic and racial biases, cultural beliefs, and reduced access to medical care because of poverty are the many causes of health disparities. The purpose of this grant is to promote access to health care by applying to a healthcare plan, early screening, detection, and, if needed, coping and treatment of colorectal cancer in the medically underserved African-American community through education. To achieve this The Crescent Foundation, Inc. will present a Colorectal Cancer Community Education Symposium at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center on Saturday, August 21, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Speakers will include medical clinicians including a primary care physician, gastroenterologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgical oncologist, registered dietitian, psychiatrist/ psychologist, clergy, and a motivational coach.
